Report by Haldun Oguz, MD, Professor of Otolaryngology, Director, Fonomer ENT & Phoniatrics Clinic, Ankara, Turkey; President, Professional Voice Society, Turkey.
One day 40 years ago, Finland hosted the seventh Union of the European Phoniatricians (UEP) Congress. Back in 1978 it was a remarkable success to have 80 participants, mostly from Europe. This summer from 13-16 June 2018, Helsinki hosted the 29th UEP Congress with 433 ENTs, phoniatricians, phonosurgeons and speech therapists coming from 50 countries around the world. The congress had 170 abstracts, 36 roundtables, 12 workshops and six instructional courses distributed over three days of rich intense scientific programme. The congress was organised in the middle of the city overlooking ships going through the harbour.

The topics of the congress covered voice, phonosurgery, laryngology, paediatric audiology, swallowing disorders as well as speech and language disorders. The congress started in the main hall of the university of Helsinki that hosted, almost 100 years ago, concerts by the famous Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius. It continued with a warm get-together and cocktail, hosted in the hall of the city of Helsinki.

For the next three days, attendants enjoyed the congress scientific programme in Marina Congress Center where they enjoyed being all together in the upper floor exclusively reserved for the UEP congress and the four parallel sessions taking place each day. During the congress, six poster tours took place to choose the recipient of the best poster award. In addition, the recipients of the UEP awards of hearing and voice were also chosen, with a total of 6500 euros allocated for awards. The social programme was planned to offer the best experience of Helsinki and Finland. A bus tour around Helsinki and evening concert on one of the islands of Helsinki were offered on the second evening. Meanwhile, keynote speakers were invited to the Presidential Sauna evening, hosted by the President of the congress, Prof Ahmed Geneid, where they enjoyed the Finnish Sauna and the taste of salmon cooked on an open fire after a short boat ride to one of the islands in Helsinki.
The last evening of the congress was marked by the gala dinner in the House of Nobility of Finland where many of the talented participants took the stage and shared their talents in singing and playing music.
