Italian ENT specialist Professor Desiderio Passàli was awarded an honorary professorship in April by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The honour was conferred at an event on 18 April in Samarkand State Medical University by the Dean of the University, Professor U U Ochilov, and the Rector, Professor J A Rizaev.
The ‘Laurea Honoris Causa’ was awarded “for the contribution to the development of the educational and scientific potential of Samarkand University, the formation of a positive image among foreign educational institutions, and the support and strengthening of bilateral cooperation.”
Numerous faculty members and about thirty physicians were present for the ceremony. The day then concluded with a visit to the University Museum where Prof Passàli’s photo was added to the wall alongside other professors who have received this distinction over the years.
Prof Passàli, from the ENT Department of Siena University, served as President of IFOS from 2005 to 2009. He has remained actively involved in the Federation, continuing to work as an advisor to the Presidents and Secretaries-General. At present he is collaborating closely with Professor Angel Ramos. He has previously received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Bucharest in Romania and Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia.
“Over the years, I have dedicated myself, together with a group of colleagues, to supporting and sharing knowledge with countries in need of assistance and training,” says Prof Passàli. “My efforts have been particularly focused on Romania, Mongolia, and Uzbekistan, although I have also worked with several other nations.
“In these countries, through regular visits each year, I have established strong scientific and clinical relationships, which have led to numerous collaborative research projects, practical solutions, and meaningful conferences and meetings.
Looking ahead, it is my firm intention – as well as that of my dedicated team of esteemed colleagues – to continue this meaningful work in countries where such collaboration can bring tangible benefits.”
