Professor Arun Iyer has taken on the role of President of the British Society of Otology. A consultant otologist and professor at University Hospital Monklands in Lanarkshire, Scotland, he is actively involved in postgraduate education through the University of Glasgow. He leads several surgical training programmes, including advanced ear surgery and endoscopic ear surgery dissection courses.
"Through my involvement in international meetings and collaborations, I have seen first-hand the value of global engagement," Professor Iyer says. "I believe there is significant opportunity for the BSO to strengthen ties with otology societies worldwide – fostering shared learning, innovation and ultimately improving patient outcomes. I hope future BSO meetings will increasingly reflect this global outlook by welcoming colleagues from across the international otology community.
"I follow in the footsteps of Mr Peter Monksfield and the BSO team, whose tenure has been marked by excellence and progress. I hope to build on this strong foundation, continuing to champion the interests of otologists while also advancing the care and understanding of ear health within the wider public.
"Another key priority during my presidency is to enhance public engagement. As specialists, we have an important role not only in treating disease but also in promoting prevention and awareness. From encouraging safe ear care practices to addressing noise-induced hearing loss – particularly among younger populations – and improving understanding of hearing loss more broadly, there is much we can do to make a difference.
"On a personal level, the BSO holds deep significance for me. My commitment to otology is shaped not only by my professional journey but also by personal experience. As the grandson of someone who developed severe hearing loss due to ototoxic medication, and the son of someone affected by conductive hearing loss, I have witnessed the profound impact hearing impairment can have on individuals and families. These experiences continue to motivate my work and my dedication to this field.
"Through education, collaboration, and innovation, I hope we can collectively reduce the burden of ear disease and improve the lives of those we serve."
