Audiology Diagnosis – Third Edition is a comprehensive textbook that provides an in-depth overview of diagnostic audiology. Covering topics such as pure-tone audiometry, speech testing, vestibular assessment, tinnitus evaluation and tele-audiology, the book offers a broad and detailed exploration of contemporary audiological practice. As a student on the Hearing Aid Dispenser Level 5 Apprenticeship, I found the text both useful and informative, helping to reinforce theoretical concepts while demonstrating their relevance in clinical settings.
The book is aimed primarily at audiology students, trainee hearing aid dispensers, audiologists and other healthcare professionals involved in hearing and balance assessment. In my view, it is highly successful in meeting the needs of this audience. The content is presented in a logical format, with clear explanations, illustrations, case examples and practical insights that make complex topics accessible to readers with varying levels of experience. The writing style is engaging and easy to understand without oversimplifying the subject matter.
The text is also notably up to date, addressing modern developments such as tele-audiology and modern diagnostic approaches. Given the breadth and depth of information provided, I believe it represents good value for money, particularly as it can serve as both a course textbook and a long-term professional reference resource.
One criticism concerns an apparent error on page 93. Figure 8.6(b) purports to illustrate air bubbles in fluid in the middle ear space, which appears to be incorrect; and Figure 8.6(d) is labelled as showing a retracted tympanic membrane; however, the image appears to depict impacted cerumen. As accurate visual representations are essential for developing otoscopic assessment skills, this discrepancy may cause confusion for learners.*
Overall, I consider Audiology Diagnosis to be an excellent and thorough reference resource for both students and professionals across a variety of medical and clinical sectors. It is written in a style that is easy for readers to understand while maintaining an impressive level of detail. Despite the image errors noted, I would rate the book 5 out of 5 and would strongly recommend it to anyone studying or practising within the field of audiology.
