This book is highly engaging, with a well-structured format that includes clear subheadings to support ease of reading. The book is up to date and excellent value for money.

It offers relevant content that reflects current practice. Case study examples are used to illustrate theory concepts, making the content even more relatable and practical. It is helpful to highlight why it is so important to use them with patients and their families.

The book is beneficial for counselling across both adult and paediatric settings, including working with adults, older populations, parents, children and teenagers. The book considers the perspective of both the patient and the audiologist, providing a balanced approach to effective counselling. This enhances the counselling process and has a positive impact on rehabilitation. For example, it addresses how audiologists may, at times, overlook or dismiss patient’s emotional responses during appointments. A scenario is included to illustrate how taking the patient’s perspective into account can lead to more effective and empathetic care.

This book is an excellent tool for clinicians, students and teachers, offering support for both learning and teaching purposes. Each chapter includes self-directed learning and learning activities that would be particularly beneficial for teaching purposes. This may support student engagement and enhance understanding, making the book a valuable educational tool.

I would rate this book 5 out of 5 and highly recommend to anyone who is new to counselling or feeling a bit uncertain about it. It reinforces core theories but also instils confidence in applying that knowledge effectively and ethically in a clinical setting.
