The Oxford Handbook of ENT and Head and Neck Surgery is one of those books that very quickly earns a permanent place in your bag and scrubs pocket. In classic Oxford Handbook fashion, it distils a huge amount of clinically relevant information into a concise, genuinely portable guide without sacrificing clarity or practicality. Throughout my ENT training so far, I have repeatedly found myself reaching for it during busy on-calls, outpatient clinics, and even between theatre cases when needing a quick and reliable reference guide.

This book is ideally suited to ENT trainees, resident doctors and any clinician regularly managing ENT presentations. I believe it succeeds exceptionally well in meeting the needs of its audience. The content is logically structured into chapters covering different anatomical areas within the ear, nose and throat before progressing seamlessly into highly practical later chapters focusing on common operations, ward care, practical procedures and allied health professionals. These sections are especially valuable because they closely reflect the realities of modern ENT practice and the situations trainees regularly encounter on a day-to-day basis.

Another major strength is the use of clear, suitably labelled images and diagrams throughout. These break up the text beautifully and make anatomy, pathology and procedures far easier to visualise and retain, giving the handbook a very approachable and engaging feel.

Importantly, the content feels modern, relevant and up to date, while the sheer frequency with which it can be used makes it excellent value for money. It is therefore no surprise that the book describes itself as “the essential pocket guide to ENT practice” – a claim it genuinely lives up to.

Overall, this book is an outstanding pocket guide: practical, informative and easy to navigate. It is the sort of book you end up reaching for countless times during a busy shift and very quickly wonder how you ever managed without it.
