Over the last few weeks, I have had the pleasure of exploring a modern-day surgical social media platform through the innovative SurgeOn app – launched in the UK in January 2025 after seeing success in the US. SurgeOn is easily accessible through the App Store or Play Store. I found the registration process straightforward, and the transition from creating an account to using the app’s features for the first time was seamless.
As an aspiring surgeon myself, I found this app – created by surgeons Drs Jeremy Heffner, Mark Soliman and Mario Lebya – captured my interest immediately. Described as “Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube all rolled into one”, its initial appeal lies in its familiar social media format. By asking for my personal interests to personalise the experience, I was able to follow and engage with my preferred surgical communities and specialties.
As I continued to use the app daily, SurgeOn gradually became part of my routine. Notifications about medical webinars, surgical team meetings and daily posts from communities across different specialties kept me consistently engaged.
The modern design of SurgeOn helps retain the interest of younger, aspiring doctors like myself, as knowledge is always just a click away. The search function is intuitive, allowing users to explore content from their preferred specialties. I did notice that only a few specialties currently have a wide range of content; in the future, including more areas such as ENT would be a great addition as the app continues to grow.
One of SurgeOn’s standout features is the ability to watch laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgeries just like any video on other social media platforms. The videos are concise and stay focused on the topic indicated in the title. I was particularly inspired by the posts detailing surgical interventions for complex patients, as well as the insights shared by various medical professionals through comments.

Advanced technology and robotics are regularly showcased on SurgeOn, helping make surgical knowledge accessible to people everywhere. As SurgeOn continues to expand, it promises to be an excellent platform for informing and educating the world about current surgical practices, advances and emerging techniques, as well as exposing users to procedures not typically seen in day-to-day practice. Personally, I would love to see more content from otorhinolaryngology, my area of interest. Overall, the user experience is excellent, and having more in-depth coverage of my favourite specialty would be a fantastic way to learn and improve my knowledge in the future.
