Professor Angel Ramos-Macias.

Our Newsround editor, Haseem Raja, asks Professor Angel Ramos-Macias about his plans for IFOS 2026, which takes place in Istanbul in September.

Can you briefly describe your role in IFOS 2026 and what it involves?

My actual position is IFOS general secretary, and according to our bylaws I have been collaborating in the scientific programme design for IFOS 2026 in Istanbul. My main commitment is to evaluate the balance of the programme and guide Prof Önerci in the programme design.

Tell us a bit about your background and what motivated you to take on this role?

Four years ago I was proposed by the executive committee, which represents all ENT societies all over the world, and all geographical areas. I think it was an excellent opportunity to collaborate and include my points of view in this magnificent society.

What aspect of IFOS 2026 are you personally most passionate about shaping?

As general secretary my main concern is to organise a balanced programme, including all aspects of the ENT work, research and activities. My other aim is to collaborate in the inclusion of YO-IFOS (young members) as active participants in the meeting.

From a personal point of view, as my main practice and research is in otology and neurotology with a focus on cochlear implants, I have been involved in these aspects of the programme.

From your perspective, what key priorities or themes should this congress deliver for the global ENT community?

There are more than 40 areas covered, so it is difficult to choose! All aspects of our work will be presented, but if I had to choose key themes, I would like to mention the role of AI and future technologies in our field, action for education, and humanitarian activities.

Are there any areas of ENT that you feel will be particularly highlighted in this meeting?

If I have to mention one, it would be the impact that IFOS is making in the younger generation, ensuring that they actively participate in collaborative actions and research. Also, our commitment to being open to all nationalities and all scientific ideas, as well as openly collaborating with WHO.

What do you think will distinguish IFOS 2026 from previous congresses?

All congresses are different. Held in Istanbul, a bridge between East and West, this meeting will highlight the importance of cultural integration in science.

What has been the most rewarding – or challenging – part of preparing for IFOS 2026 so far?

Organising a world congress is never easy, and especially in this complex historical period that we live in, but we have to overcome difficulties and remember that what we have in common is the importance of our patients, wherever they are.

If you could give one message to colleagues considering attending, what would it be?

Of course, I invite all ENTs and other professionals related with this field – from basic research to audiology – to participate actively, to see each other face to face, and to share not only our knowledge but also our experiences and global community.
