The St George’s Emergency Head & Neck Ultrasound Course (18 September 2025)

Emergency head and neck ultrasound is an increasingly vital diagnostic tool in acute care settings. It offers rapid, non-invasive assessment of critical structures including the airway, neck vessels, thyroid, salivary glands and soft tissues.

Its real-time imaging capability supports prompt evaluation of life-threatening conditions such as airway compromise, neck trauma, abscesses and vascular injuries. Ultrasound also aids in identification of foreign bodies, haematomas and guidance for procedures such as abscess drainage and vascular access.

Compared to CT or MRI, ultrasound is more accessible, involves no radiation exposure and can be performed at the bedside, making it particularly valuable in emergency and resource-limited environments. For clinicians, especially those in ENT, emergency medicine and critical care, proficiency in head and neck ultrasound enhances diagnostic confidence, improves patient safety and facilitates timely interventions. Its growing role in emergency care reflects the broader trend toward point-of-care ultrasound as a frontline diagnostic modality.
