This book is a useful addition to the currently available revision resources for those preparing for the Part 1 FRCS otolaryngology examination. Its combination of mixed-topic questions in a mock exam format makes it unique compared to other MCQs books available on the market currently.
This book is structured around six papers, each comprising 60 single-best-answer questions covering a mix of specialties, thus mimicking the actual examination. In the early preparation stage, this can be used as an adjunct to revision, helping to identify areas of weakness that require more in-depth study using other resources. In the later stage of preparation, candidates can combine two papers under timed conditions, thus replicating, to some extent, the time pressure, cognitive demands and mental fatigue encountered during the actual examination.
The accompanying explanations are clear and succinct with supporting references that are up-to-date and reflect current UK guidelines and clinical practice. There are also helpful tips on examination techniques, such as differentiating between ‘the most appropriate investigation’ or ‘initial investigation’. Overall, I rated this book 4 out of 5 as it is not a ‘must have’ but can be useful as a supplementary resource for assessing examination readiness.
