In the fourth edition of this internationally recognised text, Professor Hans Behrbohm and his co-authors have taken over authorship from Professors Walter Becker, Hans Heinz Naumann and Carl Rudolph Pfaltz.

This latest edition from Thieme has had existing chapters updated to include up-to-date diagnostic and management tools in line with current scientific knowledge and practice, as well as an additional section on swallowing. Drawings and diagrams from the previous editions have been updated with the addition of some new illustrations and patient photography.

The book is divided into nine chapters covering: the ear; nose, nasal sinuses and face; mouth and pharynx; larynx and hypopharynx; voice, speech and language; tracheobronchial tree; oesophagus and swallowing; neck and thyroid gland; and salivary glands. Each chapter covers the essential core knowledge including applied anatomy and physiology, common pathology, the use of investigations and diagnostic workup and management within a clinical setting from experts across Germany and the UK. Clear, high-quality images and diagrams supplement the content.

This book is an excellent text to lay down sound understanding of the basic sciences, diagnostic workup and management for medical students, MRCS and FRCS exam candidates but perhaps does not go into the ‘fine detail’ management points required for the FRCS exam.

The price point of £97 to £107 is typical for a textbook of this calibre but would be considered high for many resident doctors and trainees. It is an excellent supplementary textbook for core knowledge and self-directed study.
