This second edition of Video-Based Aural Rehabilitation Guide by Linda L Daniel and Sneha V Bharadwaj is an excellent treasure trove of resources for both students and junior practitioners across audiology, speech and language therapy and deaf education.

Readers are taught the fundamentals of truly holistic aural rehabilitation in children and adults across 10 chapters through accessible text, clear figures, recommended reading lists, study questions and real-world case studies. The key resource is the companion website, where over 240 corresponding videos can be accessed to contextualise the information within the book’s pages. Videos range from interviews with practitioners, parents and patients to fly-on-the-wall recordings from appointment sessions.

This second edition now includes considerations for delivering aural rehabilitation to patients from diverse backgrounds, with an entire chapter dedicated to culturally responsive service delivery. In this chapter, we meet Amari, a young child with a cochlear implant from Kenya, and his mother Kate. Kate explains how their family’s structure and culture influence their goals for Amari’s development, wishing for him to participate in shared traditions within their community. As such, Amari’s rehabilitation session in video 5.11 is centred around him learning concepts and vocabulary specific to their culture. As a clinician working in an urban setting, I would have appreciated the teachings of this chapter during my early studies and would recommend the book to students based on this chapter alone.

Overall, I rate this book 5/5 owing to its accessibility, clarity and comprehensiveness. Visual and observational learners, this book may be perfect for you.
