Increased isolation is a common sequalae of communication difficulties associated with traumatic brain injury. This is often because both the person and the people around the person are unsure how to adjust their conversation behaviours to compensate for these difficulties. Communication partner training is a therapy approach that has been shown to improve communication skills and results in emotional benefits. Given that communication partner training interventions are currently only available in English, this study aimed to explore the potential benefits and barriers to implementing communication partner training in China and to inform a cultural adaptation of such an intervention for people with traumatic brain injuries in China. The authors conducted a cross-sectional survey study of 169 medical professionals and 170 non-medical professionals. Only a third (33.3%) of professionals and no non-medical professionals had heard of communication partner training. Although a lack of awareness and available programmes was identified as a barrier, participants recognised that this type of intervention could improve people’s confidence and everyday communication. Cultural adaptations of interventions is important, but increasing awareness is equally important to support genuine implementation.
