Communication Partner Training (CPT) is a speech and language therapy approach whereby a person with an acquired communication disorder (such as a stroke, brain injury or dementia) and a close other are supported to have better conversations. Several intervention programmes have been developed and published in English, but there are very few that have been adapted for different linguistic and cultural contexts. This paper describes a survey in China which explores awareness of communication partner training in the brain injury context. People who would be considered close others – 169 healthcare professionals and 170 non-healthcare professionals – were recruited via a snowballing method to answer questions exploring barriers and benefits of the intervention to inform an adaptation for China. Results demonstrated low awareness of the approach, but much interest. The authors emphasise the need for future work, both in the standardisation of speech and language therapists’ broader clinical training and in trialling of communication partner training in China.
