The authors conducted a retrospective observational study on 112 neonates tested with auditory brainstem response (ABR) and auditory steady-state response (ASSR). The main aim was to compare hearing thresholds obtained by ASSR, ABR and behavioural audiometry at different frequencies and determine the sensitivity and specificity of ASSR and ABR in the diagnosis of hearing loss in young children. The results suggest that assessment should begin with ABR and continue with ASSR at 1000 then 500 Hz in order to broaden the frequency range studied. The authors observe that diagnosis of moderate hearing loss is still a challenge which needs further evaluation.
