In this article, the authors describe their experiences with an altered auditory feedback (AAF) device: SpeechEasy® during a random clinical trial. AAF has been reported in other laboratory studies to reduce stuttering events without influencing the rate, intensity or frequency of natural speech. During the randomised clinical trial both groups of participants used the device for six months. One group received training with fluency while the other group did not receive training. The researchers report that there was no statistical difference in treatment outcomes between the two groups following completion of treatment. Both groups demonstrated a 40% reduction in stuttered syllables compared to baseline and did not have a relapse for three to six months. They concluded that the device was a viable treatment option for patients with stuttering.
